Why starting over feels different than expected

One thing I didn’t expect after moving to Dubai was how unspectacular change can feel.

If you had asked me before, I probably would have described a fresh start differently. Bigger. More exciting. More visible. I think I imagined arriving and instantly feeling transformed — as if a new country automatically creates a new version of yourself.

But the reality feels much quieter than that.

What I’ve noticed over the last weeks is that change rarely arrives all at once. It doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t show up in one dramatic moment where everything suddenly feels different. Instead, it slips into everyday life so quietly that you almost don’t notice it at first.

You stop checking maps. You remember where things are. You start building routines. You have favourite places without planning them. You realise that you’re not organising your day around the fact that you moved anymore — you’re simply living.

And I think that surprised me more than anything.

Because I expected transformation and what I’m experiencing feels more like recognition.

I’m not becoming a completely different person. I still enjoy the same things. I still think the same way. I still notice the same patterns in myself. I still care about structure, routines, quiet moments and all the things I thought belonged to my old life.

The difference isn’t who I became. The difference is that some things became quieter.

Pressure became quieter. Expectations became quieter. Constant noise became quieter.

And maybe that’s what people often misunderstand about starting over.

A new chapter doesn’t automatically change who you are. Maybe it simply gives you enough distance to see yourself more clearly.

I find that strangely comforting.

Because there’s a lot of pressure around new beginnings. Around becoming a new person, creating a new identity, finally changing everything. But maybe that’s not the goal.

Maybe the goal is to build a different life without losing yourself in the process.

And maybe that’s why this doesn’t feel dramatic.

It just feels… calmer than I expected.
